Don Aminado (1888-1957) was together with Teffi and Sasha Chernyi one of the most popular humorists of the Russian émigré community in Paris, where he wrote for the daily newspaper Poslednie novosti. Before leaving Russia in 1920, he had worked for the magazine Novyi satirikon. His biting irony, absurdism and genius for parody are thoroughly in the tradition of Koz’ma Prutkov and his verse earned the fulsome praise of Bunin and Tsvetaeva. This is a superb selection of Don Aminado’s poems and aphorisms between 1920 and 1951, compiled, annotated and illustrated by the distinguished literary historian Vadim Perel’muter. |
