Tarlovskii (1902-52) was encouraged at an early age by Bagritskii and Olesha. His first collection of poems, Ironical Garden (1928), was well received but he was persecuted by RAPP, turned to translation for a living, and himself wrote only ‘for the bottom drawer’. This first collection includes his sonnet cycle ‘Pearls’ and brilliant transposition of ‘The Lay of Igor’s Campaign’. |
