By the age of twenty-four, Shengeli (1894-1956) had published four books of poems appreciated by such friends as Mandel’shtam and Akhmatova. By 1933 he had been expelled from the Soviet literary establishment but continued writing. This is only the second collection of Shengeli’s best work ever to have been published. Edited with notes by Vadim Perel’muter, illustrated by Igor’ Semennikov. |
