Who we are
Sam&Sam is an independent publisher founded in Moscow in 1974 by Sergei Bychkov and Patrick Miles, both of whom had been active in the production and dissemination of samizdat (underground literature) in the Soviet Union.
Its first two overground publications, A Child’s Prayer Book and Berdiaev’s Aphorisms, were printed in the West in limited editions and smuggled into Russia. In 1993 it became possible for Sam&Sam to print Sof’ia Kulomzina’s Our Church and Our Children in Russia itself in 50,000 copies.
Since then, Sam&Sam have published nearly forty books in Russia and England. They range from religious classics and historical studies to literary works by suppressed Russian writers, memoirs and biography.
